The Victorian government announced in November 2020 that there will be a further $191 million expansion towards the Solar Homes Program for the aim of assisting Victorians in lowering their electricity bills and helping homes become more energy-efficient.
This new investment will push Victoria towards becoming a greener state, utilising renewables as a primary method for electricity production and storage. The updated Solar Homes Program battery rebate is now able to be accessed by all Victorians across the state and is not subject to postcode restrictions like before.
Included in the package are an additional 42,000 solar rebates, allowing a total of 140,000 homes to install solar panels on their roof without any upfront cost over the next two years. Businesses are also now allowed to enter the program, with 15,000 rebates available.
In addition to the solar panel rebates, Victorians can also get home battery rebates as the Solar Homes Program has provided an additional 17,500 battery rebates across the next three years.
The current rebate for batteries allows for a discount of up to $4,174. Interest-free loans are not available under the solar battery rebate.
The current rebate for solar panels allows for a discount of up to $1,850 for both homeowners and rental properties. Interest-free loans are available and are required to be paid over 4 years or sooner through a lump sum.
